How Essential Oils Changed My Life

Essential oils really did change my life.

If you are not familiar with essential oils, they are the lifeblood of a plant.

Little sacs full of essential oils are found in different parts of the plant, depending on what plant it is. They are what keep a plant healthy and fit. They can be found on the leaves, stems, twigs, flowers, bark, roots, and in citrus plants, in the rind of the fruit. These essential oils are ohhh so fragrant and they have the most amazing therapeutic benefits.

I was first introduced to essential oils for aromatherapy. Now, I use them in almost every facet of my life. From preventative health care, to body maintenance, to emotional support. Essential oils help me focus, increase my energy, and relax me.

Before finding essential oils, you can say there was something missing in my life…I was behind the eight ball in many areas…I didn’t have a lot of energy, I wasn’t getting a lot of sleep, my mood swings were significant, and I was constantly getting sick.

Fast forward 3 years and I am in a very different place. I am much healthier, happier, and balanced. I get amazing sleep, I rarely have mood swings, I have plenty of energy, and I am at my optimum health.

What essential oils have done for me is provide me with a tool that I can use on a daily basis for optimum performance in my life. I look at my Pyramid of Health and see where I can use essential oils to help eat better, get more exercise, get better sleep, reduce stress, reduce my toxic load, practice informed self-care, and practice proactive medical care.

Eating RightI eat a very healthy diet of whole foods–mostly meats, vegetables, fruits, and natural fats–that I buy at a local Coop. I supplement my daily food intake with a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement, Omega-3 supplement, and cellular-regeneration supplement, because the foods that I eat don’t give me all of the nutrients I need. I also take a pre- and pro-biotic daily, as well as all natural energy supplements daily.  All of these supplements are plant-based and contain essential oils.

Exercise 

I make it a habit to exercise 4-5 days a week. Before exercising, I make a protein shake or take my energy supplements to give me the energy I need to perform my best throughout my workout. I vary my exercise routine with running, yoga, paddle boarding, paddle surfing, and playing with my daughter outdoors.

Rest/Stress Reduction

Sleep has always been an issue for me, but now I have found the perfect combination. I have a strict bedtime routine to help me get a good nights rest that includes going to bed at the same time each night, creating an environment conducive to a good night’s sleep (cold, dark room with no electronics in the room), taking my serenity essential oil capsules before bed, diffusing my serenity essential oil blend in the diffuser, putting serenity and cedarwood essential oils on the bottoms of my feet. Now I sleep 7-8 hours every night. This is amazing for someone who had insomnia for 2 years.

Reducing my Toxic Load

Even the air we breathe can be toxic, so there are many things I do to reduce the toxins in my environment. I diffuse essential oils every where I go…in my home, office, car, and I even wear diffuser jewelry. I have exchanged most of my household products with all natural essential oil products–from my toothpaste, mouthwash, hair products, skin products, cleaners, air freshness, hand sanitizer, to my laundry detergent, dish soap, and hand soap, that I either make myself using essential oils, or I buy the all natural kinds that include essential oils in them.

Informed Self Care

Continuing education is so important to me. I continue to learn different uses for the essential oils, their benefits, and other healthy and clean ways of living. I practice yoga, I meditate, I have a spiritual practice. I attend workshops and classes, and I teach a lot of them myself. I believe in Self Care first. How can we be our best selves and take care of others, if we can’t take care of ourselves first?

Proactive Medical Care

Our first line of defense at our household is our essential oils. We use them for cuts, scrapes, and mosquito bites. We use them for tummy aches, allergies, and ear infections. We use them for sore throats, swollen glands, colds and the flu.

If we try them and they aren’t doing the job, then we go see the doctor. My doctor knows that we use essential oils and she is completely on board. Doctors in many hospitals and health care facilities are now including essential oils in their practices and it’s just a matter of time before they start prescribing them as an alternative to Western medicine.
